STM BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
St. Thomas More Battle of the Books is an optional reading program for 3rd - 8th grade students. Participants read from a list of 16 books (based on the Oregon Battle of the Books list), and then compete in teams by answering trivia questions about the books in a game show format. Participation in this program encourages students to read different genres and work together as a team. STM does not participate in the regional or state OBOB competition, but instead battles within STM and finalists battle other Archdiocesan schools.
Participation is not required, but all are invited!
If a student is interested in being on a team and participating in the competition, they should read a minimum of 3 books from the list by November. Once placed on a team they will be asked to read 3-5 more books. The battles will be held at the end of February/Early March. Happy reading!!

SUMMER ASSIGNMENT
Welcome to 7th grade! I'm looking forward to having you in my English and Social Studies classes, and I wanted to introduce myself before classes begin in the Fall.
My main hope for your summer is that you have lots of time to rest, unplug, and enjoy quality
time with your friends and family. The transition from sixth to seventh grade is a big one, and it’s my hope that these activities will serve as a preview of some work formats that we’ll be doing in my classes. I asked my current 7th/8th grade students, and they thought that these tasks would be helpful to make that transition as successful as possible.

The tasks in this Starter Kit are carefully designed to get you ready to hit the ground running in September. This work is meant to be done at whatever pace works for your family, but it will be due on the first day of the new school year. The completion of this packet will be your first graded task of the school year, so do your best work on each element!
