PROJECT HOPE

HELPING OTHER PEOPLE EVERYDAY

Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

Project HOPE involves students in a year-long partnership with charitable organizations in our community and applies the experience to their academic and personal development.  The service opportunities are age-appropriate, student-centered and hands-on and directly applicable to the curriculum.

KINDERGARTEN

Our kindergarten class works with local groups to help others. We help Meals on Wheels People (MOWP) give seniors meals with our students' special placemats. We also collect toys with KGW for children in need. Through this, our students learn kindness and the community feels supported.

FIRST GRADE

First grade teams up with Project Lemonade. Project Lemonade’s mission is to inspire confidence in foster youth. Together with their 7th grade buddies, they'll craft blankets for children in foster care.

SECOND GRADE

Our second grade class collaborates with Portland Parks & Recreation to promote equitable community access to healthy and eco-friendly spaces. Our students participate in park clean-ups.

THIRD GRADE

Third grade teams up with Northwest Children’s Outreach (NCO) which aims to bridge the gap between poverty and supportive agencies. Our third graders actively sort clothes on-site for NCO.

FOURTH GRADE

Fourth grade carries on the tradition of partnering with Catholic Charities, dedicated to ensuring vulnerable Oregonians have access to vital services. Our 4th graders collect supplies and prepare lunches for those in transitional housing.

FIFTH GRADE

Our 5th graders partner with Children's Book Bank (CBB), which champions child literacy, fosters family bonding, and sparks curiosity through books. They assist in restoring gently-used books directly at the Children's Book Bank location.

SIXTH GRADE

Our 6th graders team up with Portland Backpack, an initiative dedicated to assisting children at risk of hunger. Their mission is not only to provide weekend food sacks during times of greater food scarcity but also to involve the community for an impact that extends beyond alleviating hunger. Together, our sixth graders help gather backpacks and supplies on-site to support these at-risk youth.

SEVENTH GRADE

Our 7th graders align with the Oregon Food Bank (OFB) in their pursuit to ensure access to nutritious food for all. OFB not only collects and distributes food across Oregon and Southwest Washington but also addresses the deeper issues of food insecurity arising from systemic prejudices. As part of our contribution, our seventh graders assist in assembling food boxes at the Oregon Food Bank and tend to their garden during spring.

EIGHTH GRADE

Our 8th graders partner with Raleigh Hills Assisted Living (RHA), an establishment dedicated to creating a home-like setting for seniors requiring daily living assistance. As part of our collaboration, our eighth graders will engage with residents during visits in November and February, conducting gratitude and Valentine's activities respectively.
